Woz on the Apple IIc

Just came across this description of the Apple IIc in Steve Wozniak's iWoz:
This was the small Apple II—a really small one—as small as today's laptops except you had to plug it into a wall. I thought it was just a beautiful computer, my favorite one to this day. I really think it was one of the best projects ever done at Apple.
I have to agree—the IIc was a beautiful machine. Beautiful looking, and a lot of fun to use. Man, I miss the days of using it to write programs and to play games (The Coveted Mirror, Gemstone Warrior, Moon Patrol). I didn't even have a printer or modem, yet I still had a lot of fun using it.

  • There were quite a few Apple computers in our school's science lab. We typed up reports on the Apple ][c, but by then all eyes were on the Mac that ran the simulation software for our physics experiments.

    I hear that Apple still offers a decent educational discount to schools, but it saddens me to find that their "insanely great" computers have been relegated to the creative arts and are not widely used in the business world.

  • Ah yes, Macs - so expensive, and so envied.

    Although Macs are big in the arts and not so big in business, they're pretty popular among tech people because they're running Unix under the hood.

  • I bought a MacBook Pro over a year ago and I agree that it's great for development. I love having the Unix access and it comes pre-installed with so many tools (perl, ruby, python ...).

    As far as price, when I was shopping for a new laptop, I was surprised to find that an equivalent equipped laptop was pretty much the same price as the MacBook Pro I bought. I upgraded the ram myself (simple to do and for a lot less than what's charged at the Apple store). If you have multiple macs at home, you can also save on OS upgrades since Apple has a family license pack (5 users for $200!).

    They are not as prevalent in the business world. I was happy to see my son's orthodontist office equipped with Macs.
