Trying out X1 desktop search (Windows)
Google Desktop Search stopped working for me for some reason, so I'm taking the opportunity to try another Desktop Search tool: X1 (now free). I'm watching the 15-min tutorial - looks pretty impressive.
I love desktop search – I'm hooked and I can't live without it. Combined with a utility like Slogger which saves to disk every webpage you view, it's like an infinite recall system, a perfect memory. It's scary.

Looking forward to hearing what you think. I have used the Google one but tried X1 when it became available for free. Biggest problem I have with them is that I have an Exchange account (which is rarely used), but which I would like indexed. The first of these desktop search apps which offers the ability to index it, but only when I have Outlook open wins! I am tired of the constant nagging for login information when Outlook is closed.

Hi Floozle - ah, brutal. I don't have an Exchange account myself.

Things I don't like so far:
• Can't seem to preview Slogger files - guess it has trouble previewing local HTML files? It says "This program cannot display the webpage".
• When I click a link in an email preview, it opens it in the preview window instead of using my default browser (Firefox)

Going with Windows Desktop Search for now.
Google Desktop - stops working after a few months
X1 - error when previewing Slogger html files (web history)
Copernic - seems to take forever to finish indexing
Windows Desktop Search - it just works. Can paste in a comma-delimited list of file extensions to index as text. I'm using the following:

Well, friends, it's back to GDS for me. Sometimes when I initiated WDS searches, it would simply return no results, regardless of what search terms I entered. Sigh.
