Outline for teaching the rules for Acquire
(Method based on Mario Lanza's The Finer Points Of Teaching Rules.)
1. Set up the board and components.
2. Distill the game down to a few sentences. (Less than a minute.)
In this game you will be buying and selling stocks in corporations. The person with the most money at the end of the game is the winner.
3. Paint an overview for the whole game. (1 to 3 minutes.)
- Core mechanics. Place a tile, buy 0-3 stocks, draw a tile
- Merger. Place a tile that joins two or more companies. Larger company absorbs smaller companies. Earn money by selling stocks in the absorbed companies. Also earn money (bonuses) by having the most or second-most stocks in the absorbed companies.
- The game ends when all active corporations are large (11+ tiles) or one corporation is very large (41+ tiles). Earn money by selling your stocks. Also earn money (bonuses) by having the most or second-most stocks in the each company.
4. Expand the overview using details—the finer points. (Show, don't just tell)
- Walk through core mechanics.
- Walk through merger. When a larger company absorbs the smaller companies in a merger, what do you do with your stocks in the smaller companies? Sell, trade, or hold. You can sell your stocks to get money. You can trade 2 stocks for 1 stock in the big merged company. You can hold your stock for when the company re-appears in the future.
- Walk through game end. When it's your turn, you decide whether to end the game.
5. Cover the exceptions, if any.
- When you place one tile beside another tile, you create a new corporation and get one free stock.
- You can't merge two large corporations (11+)
- If you are the only shareholder in a company and that company gets merged into a larger one, do you get both bonuses? Yes.
- What happens if a company is getting merged and two players have the same number of stocks? Who gets the majority and minority bonuses? The bonuses are added then divided equally.
6. Teach basic strategies and offer "fair warning." (1 or 2 minutes.)
As a company grows bigger, the good thing is that its stocks increase in value. The bad thing is that the stocks also get more expensive to buy. "So the perfect investment is one that stays really small (say two tiles) for a long time, and you are able to buy a decent majority of the twenty-five total shares." - Derk Solko
"You need to invest this initial cash wisely, for if you wrap up your money in entirely long-term firms (companies that don’t get gobbled up as the smaller partners of a merger), you won’t have enough cash to continue operating for the entire game. A nice cash flow is a requirement at the beginning of the game, and a nice assortment of majority stock in huge, expensive shares at the end is an advantage." - Derk Solko
Useful Variants
"The MITSGS has a simple variant that I think improves the three-player game; each player starts with $7,000 (instead of $6,000) and maintains a 7-tile hand (instead of 6). The additional resources make the opening stalemate less likely." - Mark Dulcey
"(1 - 100% of major bonus, 2 - 75%, 3 - 50%, 4 - 25%) (Note - this is a preferred variant to the original rule of only paying the top 2 stockholders)" - Mark Blanco

Big reason I'm getting a Pocket PC now that my Palm is dead: there are no reliable low-cost Palms at the moment. The Zire 72 and Tungsten E are getting bad reliability reviews at amazon.com (several complaints about them dying after 8 months). And the best Palms - Sony Clie's - are no longer being manufactured.
Whereas on the Pocket PC side, we have the Dell Axim X30 which has been getting illustrious reviews and is in the same price range. (Can't wait until mine arrives - it's got WiFi and Bluetooth!!)

I find Acquire (as published) a bit weak for three; there is a tendency to have a long draggy start where nobody can make anything happen, and players run out of cash and sit playing tiles until somebody can cause a merger.
The MITSGS has a simple variant that I think improves the three-player game; each player starts with $7,000 (instead of $6,000) and maintains a 7-tile hand (instead of 6). The additional resources make the opening stalemate less likely."

Freeware utility for automatically pushing buttons in Firefox
(PTFB). Drag the PTFB finger over a button on any annoying dialog, and
it will automatically close it for you from now on.
Actually it is meant to work with standard Windows widgets, which
Firefox does not use. But the PTFB author has cleverly supplied a way
to push non-standard widgets: when you drag the PTFB finger over the
button, hold down *both* mouse buttons - this will tell PTFB to click
by *coordinate*.
Using this technique, you can make PTFB work with Firefox (or any
other web browser) !!!!! Goodbye annoying login screens !!!!!

Raf - I'm about to propose as the Christmas Eve practice time ...
But will that give you enough time to write the trumpet part? Also,
are you teaching catechism at that time?
Re: Christmas Music at Sacred Heart
- I haven't worked with your voice, and I would like to know what its
capabilities are. Would you be willing to help me by letting me know
(by Nov 29) which of the following mass parts you would be interested
in cantoring? (Megan - would you be willing to forward this note to
Jessica, as my email address may not be on her antispam list?)
1 Entrance: O Come All Ye Faithful
2 Glory To God
3 Responsorial Psalm
4 Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia)
5 Offertory: It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
6 Holy
7 Memorial Acclamation (Christ has died, Christ is risen)
8 Amen
9 Lamb of God
10 Communion 1: Silent Night
11 Communion 2: TBA
12 Final: Joy To The World
Fwd: Two PTFB Tips
1. You can get PTFB to push buttons on non-standard windows (e.g.
Firefox dialogs) by dragging the PTFB finger with *both* buttons --
this tells PTFB to click by coordinate.
2. You can set the default delay, but this option is fairly well
hidden. In the PTFB dialog, click the yellow PTFB icon in the
upper-right corner; then click Set Options.
(I'm using PTFB version 1.06.3)
--
http://jonaquino.blogspot.com
Re: [Slogger] Not showing an alert dialog if the page can't be slogged
using Windows, download the freeware Push The Freakin' Button 1.06.3.
Then the next time the annoying dialog appears, double-click PTFB and
drag the finger over the OK button -- PTFB will auto-close it from now
on!
NOTE: Because the dialog does not use standard Windows widgets, when
dragging the PTFB finger over the OK button, hold down BOTH mouse
buttons, not just the left mouse button. This tells PTFB to push the
button by coordinate.

PalmGear's gift to the community. 2 options. One list in MemoPad, or individual note per app with lines for reg code, etc. I prefer this one because the all-in-one listing is much better formatted-- one numbered app per line. You can also elect to exclude the built-in core apps from the listing. Note per line in parentheses to distinguish app from hack. {Lots of other stuff you can add, but I found it tiring to change all the defaults, so I just update the basic list as dictated by installs.}
MyPalm: (with screenshots)

Two lists in the same memo. First = '# of apps installed', followed by the app names, separated by comma. Second does the same, for hacks. Sample lists (with handy Google box to permit further investigation if an app name intrigues you) -- sloooww page load:

Ji-Hwan - Look at the first game on this list of top games in Korea
# And it came to be noon and he opened the second prescription and it said 'reach back,' reach back to your memories. And in his mind there were memories that were happy, memories to lift him up. And too there were memories that brought him down, that dragged him down, that held him back. Three hours alone. Just to sort through those memories.
# And the time passed by and it was three o'clock in the afternoon and he opened the third prescription and it said, 'Examine your motives.' And as he tells the story he says that this was the time that things began to click for him; that he had not been following the motives that he wanted to follow in life. Well -- the pursuit of money, the pursuit of prestige, the pursuit of a fame, whatever it was, all of these things came into his mind and he realized that he was off track, he was off base, he was pursuing things that he didn't really want to pursue. And his life began to take a different shape, a different form at that point. Three hours to examine his motives.
# And then it was six o'clock in the evening and the last prescription was opened. It said, 'Write your worries in the sand.' So he found a stick and he wrote out his worries in the sand and he turned around to leave and he said he knew at that point the tide had turned. And the tide had turned! And as it came in it washed away his worries. Write your worries in the sand."

Hail Mary full of Grace….And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Hail Mary full of Grace….Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we to Whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an Angel may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of the Resurrection through Christ our Lord.

1. Index cards are the core of project management in Extreme
Programming. Simply write all your tasks on index cards. Then you will
have two piles: To Do and Done. So you always have a precise, accurate
indication of the % completion of our project. cf. book: Extreme
Programming.
2. They're just great for note-taking. Scribble down a note, and chuck
it into your inbox! cf. book: Getting Things Done (GTD).
In Extreme Programming, Kent Beck gives a couple of other uses for
index cards, one of which is for creating use cases ("CRC cards"). The
beauty of index cards is that their small size encourages you to be
brief and specific.

I wonder if that's a new kind of blog: the Open Inbox. Call it the "e-mlog".
bro - we need Mrs. Reyes' address so we can send her a birthday card (her bday is Saturday)
shall we mail it to you first so you can add your name?
Tom - when I give you the PDA ...
will lose all your data.
I will also be giving you PureEnergy rechargeable *alkaline*
batteries. Unlike NiCad's which last longer if you drain them before
recharging, rechargeable alkalines last longer if you recharge them
often. I recommend that you recharge the batteries daily.
If I forget, remind me to give you the PDA cradle too, so you can
connect it to your internet.
There's lots of stuff I can teach you about this PDA if you want:
- how to customize the buttons to activate the programs of your choice
- how to download your favourite websites to the PDA every night,
including the Victoria weather forecast and science news
- where to find free programs that you can download onto the PDA e.g.
units converters

3. Import the text file back into the data model.
I haven't tried this, but the text file looks fairly parsable:

celebration proper to the Sabbath.
holiday, when I attended the ceremony. So that's what I want to do on my =
Saturday official day off: get outside, and celebrate something.
Bro, here's my Before Bed Routine, if you are curious about it
Clean up the house before you go to bed. Clear hot-spots. Wash lunchbox.
Think about tomorrow before you go to bed. Review calendar: yesterday,
today, tomorrow. Process In. Sync palm, camera. Swap batteries.
Focus on yourself before going to bed. Get ready for bed. Merienda
(snack). Bible. Rosary.

Outline for teaching the Modern Art rules
1. Set up the board and components.
2. Distill the game down to a few sentences. (Less than a minute.)
In this game, you will be buying and selling paintings. The person with the most money at the end of the game is the winner."
3. Paint an overview for the whole game. (1 to 3 minutes.)
There are two ways to make money. On your turn, you choose a painting to sell. The other players will compete to buy your painting. Then the next player chooses a painting to sell. Everyone will compete to buy their painting. And so on in a circle.
The second way to make money is when the round ends. The round ends when five paintings by the same artist have been sold. When the round ends, the paintings that have been sold are sold again to the bank.
Then we do a second round. We take turns selling paintings. The round ends when five paintings by the same artist have been sold. The paintings are then sold again to the bank.
Then we do a third round. We take turns selling paintings. The round ends when five paintings by the same artist have been sold. The paintings are then sold again to the bank.
Then we do a fourth round. We take turns selling paintings. The round ends when five paintings by the same artist have been sold. The paintings are then sold again to the bank.
After four rounds, the game ends. The person with the most money is the winner.
4. Expand the overview using details—the finer points.
There are five ways to sell a painting.
Suppose I play this card. This symbol means open auction. Everyone shouts out bids. You decide when to stop. Highest bid wins.
Now it's your turn, and you play this card. This symbol means once-around auction. In a circle, each player makes one bid. You get the last bid.
Now it's your turn, and you play this card. This symbol means sealed auction. Each player puts their bid in their hand. We all reveal our bids at the same time.
Now it's your turn, and you play this card. This symbol means fixed-price auction. You name a price. In a circle, the first player to agree to that price buys it. If nobody wants to buy it, you buy it.
Now it's your turn, and you play this card. This symbol means double auction. You choose a second painting by the same artist, and sell them together. Or you let another player choose a second painting by the same artist, and they sell the paintings together. They get the money, and play continues starting at the next player. Anyone between you and that player lose their turn.
When someone shows an artist's fifth painting, the round ends immediately -- the fifth card is not sold-- and it's time to sell our paintings again, but to the bank. The most popular artist's paintings are worth $30000. The second most popular artist's paintings are worth $20000. The third most popular artist's paintings are worth $10000.
Now, in Round 2, we include the value from Round 1. So suppose this is the most popular artist, followed by this artist, followed by this artist. This artist's paintings are worth $30000 + $10000. This artist's paintings are worth $20000. This artist's paintings are worth $10000 + $20000. But how about this artist? Their paintings are worthless. Only the top three artists' paintings have value.
Now, in Round 3, we include the values from Round 1 and 2. So suppose this is the most popular artist, followed by this artist, followed by this artist. This artist's paintings are worth $30000 + $30000 + $10000. This artist's paintings are worth $20000. But how about this artist? Their paintings are worth $10000 + $20000 from Round 1, even though their paintings were worthless in Round 2.
Getting paintings to sell. You start with 9 paintings to sell. You will get 4 more paintings to sell after Round 1, and 4 more paintings after Round 2. You will not get any more paintings to sell after Round 3.
5. Cover the exceptions, if any.
Special situation #1. Nobody bids. You get the painting for free (unless it's a fixed-price auction -- in that case, you pay for the painting).
Special situation #2. Two artists have the same number of paintings. The artist on the left wins the tie. (Example).
Special situation #3. Playing a double-auction card by itself. The only time you may want to play the double-auction card by itself is if 3 paintings by that artist are on the table. You play your double-auction card, and when someone completes it, the round immediately ends without an auction because 5 paintings are now on the table. If nobody completes it, you get the painting for free.
6. Teach basic strategies and offer "fair warning." (1 or 2 minutes.)
How much do you bid for a painting? In the first round, the maximum a painting is worth is $30000 -- that's how much the bank will give you for paintings by the most popular artist. In the second round, that artist's paintings might be worth $30000+$30000 if they are again the most popular artist. Or $30000+$20000 if second place. Or $30000+$10000 if third place. Or $0 if fourth or fifth place.
And suppose a painting will be worth $30000 and you buy it for $30000 from Dale. Later you sell it to the bank for $30000. How much has your money changed by? 0. How about Dale? He has earned $30000. So try not to pay more than half of what a painting is worth, otherwise the other player will get more money than you. So if you buy the painting for $15000 from Dale, how much money does Dale get? $15000. Later you sell it to the bank for $30000. How much has your money changed by? $15000. So you and Dale are even.
Let's look at the characteristics of the five auctions. (Acknowledgement: Shannon Appelcline's review).
Once-around auction. This favours you and the person on your right.
Fixed-price auction. This favours the person on your left.
Open auction. This is the fairest auction.
Sealed auction. People tend to bid high.
Double auction. These are powerful because they influence which artist is No. 1.

Well, I have decided to make Saturday my Official Day Off (ODO). This means
no internet for Jonny on Saturdays (gasp). No appointments scheduled for
this day. Just reading, resting my body, helping my mom to prepare
breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Spending time outside.
But mainly to rest my body. I know I will feel better during the week if I
do this every Saturday.
Above is a picture of our beautiful Parliament Buildings.
